Semi-Restricted Field Access
Your Committee has looked at the new Victorian rules around Covid19 and agreed the new rules under version 11 allow for multiple groups of 10 at an outdoor recreational facility as long as a “reasonable distance” is maintained between the groups. In order to meet this requirement we shall have two distinct areas at the Trawalla field. The first is the area enclosed by the fence in front of the kitchen/alfresco (the compound) and the second will be the pits and flight line (the pits).
To comply with the rules it is most important you are aware of the number of persons in the area in to which you want to move. So for instance if you need to go into the “compound” then you need to ensure there aren’t already ten in there. Concurrently if you want to prepare your aircraft or go and fly then you will need to do a count of "the pits" to ensure there is room for you to do so. In the unlikely occurrence of more than 20 being at the field the number of areas will be increased to 3, the compound, pits and flight line.
Sure, you may think this is a chore but the alternative is don’t come to the field if it will be too much for you. We need to ensure we comply with the rules, failure of one member to do so will result in all in attendance being fined if the constabulary should do a check.
So to recap, as of today there is no longer any need to contact the Secretary and be put on a list to attend the field. When in attendance at the field the maximum number of persons within each area is adhered to, social distancing rules must be observed, masks to be worn unless eating or drinking, please use the supplied hand sanitiser when appropriate and above all have fun!
|
- 17th September 2020 - Regional Victoria back to Stage 2 lockdown.
|
Restricted Field Access
- There is a maximum number of persons at the field of 10. The secretary is maintaining and publishing by email a booking system.
- A maximum of 4 people in the alfresco area at any one time, please be sure to carefully monitor this.
- A book will be placed on the charging station shelves in which you are to record your first name, contact number, date and time of attendance.
- Mask to be worn at all times except when eating or drinking. Masks are available at the field with a cost of $1.
- Social distancing to be observed, maintaining a 1.5 metre gap.
- Please use hand sanitiser solution when necessary. If you haven’t got your own supply there are dispensers next to the kitchen door and at the foot of the stairs to the toilet.
- The kitchen is to be kept locked with access only approved in an emergency, for example to access the defibrillator, first aid kit or a fire extinguisher.
- Be sure to enjoy yourself!
|
- 6th August 2020 - Regional Victoria also in Stage 3 lockdown.

Field closed
Field closed until lifting of stage 3 restrictions.
|
- 3rd August 2020 - Face masks introduced.
|
Semi-Restricted Field Access
As of this coming Monday, 3rd August 2020, the rule around mask wearing will change in Victoria. It will be mandatory that "everyone in Victoria aged 12 years and over will need to wear a face covering when they leave home” (DHHS website https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/updated-restrictions-announced-30-july-covid-19). The exceptions are also listed on the web-page.
Note this states "when they leave home", which is vague in that a definition of home is not given. One assumes it means your property boundary and not the building’s threshold so presumably it must also be worn when in your private vehicle. Regardless, when entering the BRMFC field it is mandatory a mask is worn which effectively covers your nose and mouth at all times. Failure to do so puts not only yourself but your fellow member in jeopardy and it may result in disciplinary action being taken.
Now we are all prone to forgetfulness at times (hands up who has never left their transmitter at home). In appreciation of this, and to not ruin a much anticipated days flying, the club will have available at the field some masks. A small charge of $1 will be made to cover the costs.
The Committee asks for your assistance in starting the wearing of masks early, if you attend the field this Saturday or Sunday please wear a mask. Use of the alfresco area is probably best kept to a minimum as it can get a little crowded in there.
|
- 1st June 2020 - Field access relaxed following easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
|
Semi-Restricted Field Access
From Monday 1st June the Government has changed the rules regarding the number of persons which can be in attendance at certain gatherings. It has been increased to a total of 20 (twenty) which means we can cease the need to keep a list of members wishing to be at Trawalla. The reason being we very rarely get 20 members/guests at any one time therefore in that regard we shall be returning to normal and members may just turn up and fly. However those in attendance must keep an eye on the total and the expectation is self-regulation will be practised to ensure we meet the rules and no more than 20 persons are at the field at any one time.
All other rules and recommendations previously put in place will continue to be in effect. They have been reprinted below and will be reviewed by the Committee when necessary.
- The use of hand-sanitiser is encouraged and members are advised to bring their own supply. However sanitiser dispensers have been placed at the base of the stairs to the toilet block which is to be used before entering the toilet block. One has also been placed to the right of the entry to the kitchen on the outside wall.
- Personal distancing of at least 1.5m to be observed at all times.
- No touching another pilot’s aircraft or property. The exception may be in assisting a start for safety reasons. In this case common sense plus the use of hand sanitiser before and after handling the aircraft is recommended.
- There will be no Kitchen access at any time. The door is to remain locked and is only to be opened in an emergency to access the fire extinguisher, defibrillator or first aid kit. Absolutely no access to the kitchen area in the hut at any time. Bring your own hot water, tea/coffee/milk/soup, food, utensils, cups, plates, etc.
- Members are advised to bring their own toilet roll.
- As a final note, if you feel at all unwell please do not attend the field. This is to protect your fellow members and in order to remain in line with the Government’s recommendations.
|
- 17th May 2020 - Field re-opened following easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
|
Restricted Field Access
The state government has reviewed the COVID-19 restrictions and as of Wednesday 13th May allowed groups up to 10 in outdoor gatherings.
In accordance with the regulations, the BRMFC Committee has formulated a plan to manage the number of people in attendance and reopened the field on Sunday 17th May. See minutes of committee meeting held on 16th May for full details.
The following has been implemented to re-open the field:
-
It was decided to adopt a telephone booking method which is to be made with the Secretary to register a member’s request to attend the field and will include any guests or family members.
-
This will be entered on to the attendance spreadsheet and immediately emailed to all members. This is required for any day of the week. It is recognised the numbers during weekdays will most likely not exceed 10, however to avoid any issues all attendances must be registered with the Secretary. The list will be for the upcoming 7 days.
-
Requests must be made by telephone only and can be made any time, with a preference of between the hours of 8.00am and 10.00pm on the Secretary’s mobile number 0408 420 794.
-
Time limited attendance - Time slots available will be from the start times as in the Safety Rules v1.1 to 12.30pm and 12.30pm to end of flying times (as listed in the Safety Rules v1.1). A person can remain at the field beyond this time as long as the total number in attendance will not exceed 10. If or when another pre-booked member arrives then they are to leave.
-
Eligible persons - all financial members are eligible to attend during the restriction period. Friends and relatives are also able to attend but some thought to fairness to members should be made especially in busy periods.
-
Burrumbeet - will be open to all members, however the limit of 10 with social distancing and other safety rules will apply. Due to the historically low numbers using Burrumbeet the number of members attending will be by self-regulation and will be a first-come-first-served basis.

- 29th March 2020 - Temporary closure of field due to COVID-19 pandemic
|
Temporary Field Closure
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has led to government restrictions on social gatherings and unnecessary travel, the Ballarat Radio Model Flying Club committee has decided as of 29th March to close the fields (Trawalla & Burrumbeet) until further notice. From time to time there may be a member or two onsite checking the security of our assets.
The following has been done to close the field:
- Attached A3 laminated sign to the entrance gate with cable ties (used paper hole punch) – see pics.
There’s one on either side of the gate wire to give support against wind from the north or south.
- Turned off the two water tank taps including the toilet.
- Turned off the gas bottle supplying the kitchen.
- Put all loose items under veranda in the kitchen.
|
- Club position on COVID-19 as at 24th March 2020
|
In a nutshell we have adopted the MAAA guidelines. The club takes the threat seriously and all events & gatherings such as meetings have been suspended or cancelled.
The field is still open because we don’t need to be in close contact with one another to pursue our sport/hobby and secondly it is generally only one day a week. However this virus represents a threat of serious illness or worse especially to those in the high risk categories so strict adherence to Health Department advice is mandatory.
The greatest concern is the kitchen area where we started putting names on cups on Sunday 22nd March and ensuring the benchtops and cupboard handles are clean and regularly wiped down.
The MAAA distributed hygiene guidelines have been printed and displayed prominently on the overhead cupboard doors as well as outside in the noticeboard cabinet. Most of this is common sense and things we should be doing all the time.
We were mindful of the 1.5m distance (spitting distance I guess) at all times particularly in the kitchen although it is difficult to maintain. Do not congregate in the kitchen at all; just go in get what you want and leave to avoid congestion in the confined space. If you enter and someone is already there, go back out and wait until they leave.
Another precaution would be to wear gloves in the kitchen to avoid skin contact with surfaces touched by others. This would be another line of defence particularly if you consider yourself to be at a high risk of contracting the virus. There are the food handling gloves in one of the drawers below the cutlery drawer. Just be careful to only touch the gloves you are going to use as they are pulled from the box.
Having said all that and considering the latest developments regarding the spread of the virus, it is strongly recommended to avoid using the kitchen facilities altogether and BYO food & drinks. Also, don’t forget to keep your guard up in the compound area as well and don’t touch what isn’t yours.
The reason for these measures is to protect our family, friends and fellow club members. Every member must take their own personal risk factors into account when deciding whether to come to the flying field. In particular people in high risk categories should follow health department warnings closely and eliminate unnecessary contact.
We must do our utmost to get through this unprecedented (in modern times) crisis while trying to maintain some normality in our lives.

Our flying field that we have leased since 2000 is part
of the Lal Lal Estate which has recently been sold to overseas interests. Unfortunately
the new owner has ordered us to vacate the site by November 30th 2014.
We are actively searching for a new field in the Ballarat district to enable the
club's flying activities to continue. If anyone knows of any available land
that might be suitable please contact the club.
